Farmer survey belts One Plan Work

by Colin Williscroft

5/3/2010

A Federated Farmers survey shows Horizons Region farmers are agreed on one thing – and it’s not One Plan.

Fed’s dairy section executive member Andrew Hoggard told Rural News that while responses are still coming in, more than 2150 are in support of an non-regulatory approach towards land use, with just three backing One Plan.

Hoggard says this is the biggest response ever to a Federated Farmers’ petition.

He says what makes it even more interesting is two-thirds of respondents are not Federation members. They got hold of the petition because it was sent to all rural boxholders in the Horizons region.

Hoggard says the petition was started because he and others could not believe Horizons’ assertion that only 10% of farmers opposed One Plan.

He was one of more than 70 farmers who attended the hearing on the day the Feds made its submission.

Hoggard is hopeful the hearing’s commissioners now understand farmers’ position more clearly.
